Le berceau de la cité est l'Abbaye bénédictine Saint André fondée au Xe siècle sur le tombeau de l'Ermite Sainte
Casarie, au sommet du Mont Andaon.
The city is the birthplace of the Benedictine Abbey Saint André founded in the tenth century on the tomb of the Holy Hermit Casarie the summit of Mont Andaon.
L'abbaye acquiert rapidement une importance économique de
premier plan, convoitée par la République d'Avignon qui, depuis la
construction du pont Saint-Bénézet en 1189, convoite la rive droite du Rhône.

L'abbé de Saint-André va profiter du siège d'Avignon par le roi de France Louis VIII en 1226,
lors de la Croisade contre les Albigeois, pour s'allier avec le roi.
Par un acte de paréage, la seigneurie de Saint-André est partagée entre
le roi et l'abbé.
The abbot of Saint-André will benefit from Avignon seat by King Louis VIII of France in 1226 during the crusade against the Albigenses, to ally with the king. By an act of paréage, the lordship of Saint-André is shared between the king and the priest.
